RM Dictionary: Wedge Issue

After reading the letters to the editor in today's Star Tribune, I felt it necessary to define a term or two.

Wedge Issue: (wj i sh'oo) Any issue on which the DFL is on the wrong side (ex. Illegal immigration gay marriage).

Undocumented Citizen: (un-dok'yu-ment'id sit-y'zin) See illegal immigrant.

I agree - this "wedge issue" nonsense doesn't address the issue. There are wedge issues used by democrats against republicans - stem cell research is one such issue. Creationism might be another.

That being said, I thought the advertisements that Pawlenty used in 2002 to exploit the immigration issue were done in a way to marginalize an unpopular minority for political gain.

The push for a ballot question on gay marriage is the same - it's an attempt to marginalize an unpopular minority for political gain.

That doesn't take a way the need for people opposing the Bachmann amendment to explain - clearly - why gay unions should have legal protections.

Those opposing Pawlenty's immigration proposals need to do more than say they are "anti-immigrant" or "xenophobic".
