Hatch flip-flop of the week #7

Flip Flop of the Week Volume 1, Issue 7:

Mike Hatch Flip-Flops on Parental Notification

1990: Hatch Open To Relaxing Parental Notification Law. “Hatch said abortion should be avoided through education and adoption if at all possible. But he promised to veto any bill that encroaches on current abortion rights as spelled out in the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court precedent. Hatch said he would be open to relaxing a Minnesota law that requires minors to notify both parents or a judge before getting an abortion.” (Dane Smith and Betty Wilson, “Perpich, Hatch Spar On Taxes, Abortion, Travel, Montgomery,” Star Tribune, August 24, 1990)

1994: Hatch Supported Parental Notification. “The MCCL backing is based on Hatch’s agreement with the group’s position on each of eight questions involving current abortion issues. His positions include support for ‘informed consent’ laws and parental notification and opposition to public funding for abortions and against the proposed Freedom of Choice Act. He also sided with MCCL in backing a law against abortion ‘as a means of birth control.’ The problem with all that is that Hatch, like both his DFL opponents, continues to identify himself as a staunch supporter of abortion rights. He has held that position for many years and promoted it in his 1990 challenge to DFL Gov. Rudy Perpich, who was a fairly passive opponent of abortion.” (Dane Smith, “MCCL Support For Hatch Prompts Allegations Of Flip-Flop On Abortion Issue,” Star Tribune, September 2, 1994)
