DFL Hypocrisy gets a Reality Check

"'Democrats across America stand united in exposing and ending the Republican culture of corruption - and in its place putting forth an agenda of strong ethics reforms that will provide the American people with honest leadership at all levels of government,'” said Melendez." (Source DFL Press Release, 1/18/2006)

Those are the words of DFL Chairman Brian Melendez in a press release issued yesterday. The release also highlights contributions from Abramoff and his associates which were given to Minnesota Republican candidates. However, the DFL neglected to mention the vast sums of Abramoff-tainted monies it and it's candidates have received. (Click here to view the entire release)

Some hours after the DFL issued this release, Pat Kessler issued a Reality Check.

"But in fact most of the Abramoff-related monies in Minnesota went to Democrats." - Pat Kessler, Reality Check, 1/18/2006

$15,000 of the $19,000 Abramoff-tainted contributions in Minnesota went to Democrats. The DFL has said it will not return it's dirty money.

In 2002, $9000 of the DFL's Abramoff-tainted contributions went to help the ever-so-successful Walter Mondale for U.S. Senate campaign. The DFL's patron saint, the late Sen. Wellstone, took $1000 in Abramoff-related contributions in 2002.

Rep. Oberstar is going to keep his $3,500 in Abramoff-tainted contributions, following the lead of Brian Melendez, because he sees nothing wrong with the money he has received.

Sen. Coleman
has given his $3000 in Abramoff-related contributions to charity. Rep. Kennedy has done the same with his $1000 in Abramoff-related contributions. I applaud both Kennedy and Coleman for giving away the money. I wish I could say the same for the DFL.

Please call the DFL today and ask them to give away their dirty money. (651) 293-1200 or 1-800-999-7457

I have added a list of charities to which the Abramoff-tainted funds can be sent.

Please define "Abramoff tainted money" for your readers.

How much money did Jack Abramoff give DIRECTLY to Minnesota dems or the DFL?

Hint: ZERO

Nice attempt at spinning.

It only took 1 hour and 14 minutes for a Democrat to speak up for coruption. I'm truly impressed. You should be proud of yourself.

You obviously didn't see the story, did you?

In all honesty, you can't tell me that if the GOP was given the money instead of the DFL that you wouldn;t be all over it.

And if it did happen, the GOP would have given it back.

Nice. Attack but don't answer the questions.

Must be too dizzy from all the spinning to read and comprehend what I wrote.

By giving it back you mean the tainted money Kennedy and Kline got from the indicted Tom Delay?

There is nothing neccessarily wrong with money that Abramoff's clients gave to the DFL or DFLers. Groups that unwittingly hired a felon to lobby for them shouldn't suffer for his sins. Jackass. Not a single cent of Jack Abramoff's own money was given to any Democrat anywhere. Poor Republicans need to let people know that they're corrupt as all hell, but Democrats are kind of dirty too!

It won't work, RM. Find something else to lie about.

MR, please point out the names of the Dems on this list of Abramhoff contritubutors. I can't find any.

If there was proof that any of this money was directed by Abramoff to be donated to Democrats, then it would be "dirty" money. So far, there is no proof. So why should Democrats give legal money back?

Just because Abramoff ripped off some of these groups doesn't mean that all of their donations are corrupt. Should Democrats refrain from going into every McDonald's that Abramoff has ever been to simply because he was there once and might be telling the workers to give Dems free Big Macs? Come on.

I like how you were tracking he amount of time that it took a Democrat to speak up. I just happened upon your blog while checking out some political stull on Blogger, I have never been here before, and I am curious what your timer says about this comment.

Howard Dean was 100% accurate whe he stated,

"There are no Democrats who took money from Jack Abramoff, not one, not one single Democrat. Every person named in this scandal is a Republican. Every person under investigation is a Republican. Every person indicted is a Republican."

I do not deny that democrats took money from some of Abramoff's clients... but that hardly makes the money tainted. What taints the money is when it is funneled through intermediaries in an attempt to conceal the origin of the money. Much like DeLay funneling money through the GOP in an effort to violate or subvert campaign finance laws.

Here are a couple of the Senators you are probably referencing (in the future, research a little and disclose who you are accusing so that readers won't have to guess):

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has received $47,000 from Indian tribes which Abramoff represented. The money came during a fundraiser, came from the tribe and not through Abramoff. Reid plans on keeping these funds because they were acquired legally.

Sen. Patty Murray's office said the Washington state Democrat, who accepted $55,000 from the lobbyist, also doesn't plan to return any of the money because it did not come from Abramoff directly... again it came from an Indian tribe directly.

In fact all of your lies about the Democrats can easily be researched. I emplore you to find one instance of Abramoff giving money directly to any democrat.

The heart of this scandal is that in many cases, much like Bob Ney, it doesn't matter who gave or got which money from or to whom. What really matters here is whether the monies given, were given as a gesture of goodwill in fundraising... or if the money was given in exchange for a particular service.

You see Republican man... you like to decieve your readers with the shadowy facts which help you to illustrate the evils of the democrats... all the while neglecting to admit the faults of your party members in this scandal. Does your fallacious defense that, "Democrats do it too" condone the actions of Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, Tom DeLay, and others who accepted this 'tainted' money in return for political favors. This my friend, is the scandal... shadowed under the veil of who took money from whom. The money doesn't matter, it is the favors received for that money which I dare say, you will not be able to prove that the Democrats are involved.

Better luck next time... I fear that you will have to re-work your argument a bit better in the future.
